Healthy Schools

Dear Salome Elementary School Families and Staff,

As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, we want to make our school community aware of A.R.S. § 15-242.01, the Arizona Healthy Schools Act. The law promotes healthier food choices and limits students' exposure to certain food additives. It applies to food served or sold by the school or third parties on campus during the regular school day.

Schools, school organizations, and third parties may not serve or sell foods or beverages containing any of the following ingredients during the applicable school day:

  • Potassium bromate

  • Propylparaben

  • Titanium dioxide

  • Brominated vegetable oil (BVO)

  • Yellow Dye 5 or 6

  • Blue Dye 1 or 2

  • Green Dye 3

  • Red Dye 3 or 40

If a product contains even one of these ingredients, it may not be served or sold by the school or a school-related organization during the school day.

The law does not prohibit all processed or packaged foods. Foods may be served or sold as long as they do not contain a prohibited ingredient and meet applicable school nutrition requirements. Examples include:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables

  • Whole-grain foods

  • Dairy products and yogurt without prohibited ingredients

  • Nuts and seeds, when permitted

  • Foods prepared from basic ingredients

  • Packaged foods without prohibited ingredients

  • School meals that meet federal and state requirements

Always check the ingredient label. Being packaged or processed does not automatically make a food prohibited.

The law does not prohibit parents or guardians from providing food to their own child, even if it contains a prohibited ingredient. However, families are encouraged to provide nutritious foods and should continue to follow school policies regarding allergies, food sharing, classroom snacks, and celebrations.

If you plan to bring food to share with a class, please provide a list of ingredients and check with the school office before purchasing or bringing the food. This will help ensure that the food meets school and legal requirements.

School personnel, clubs, parent organizations, and other groups may not sell or provide prohibited foods or beverages on campus during the applicable school day.

This includes:

  • Fundraisers

  • Classroom celebrations and parties

  • Concession sales

  • School stores and vending machines

  • Clubs and organizations

  • Parent or community events held on campus

Before purchasing food for a fundraiser or school event, please check the ingredient label to ensure that none of the prohibited ingredients are included.

We appreciate your cooperation as we implement this statewide requirement. Together, we can comply with Arizona law while supporting healthy choices and a positive learning environment for our students.

Thank you for your continued support of Salome Elementary School!
